Afgan Khukuri (Defender)
AEOF or Afghanistan Enduring Operation Freedom Khukuri Knife is the current issue of Khukuri or Kukri for Gurkhas who are in Afghanistan war. The Gurkhas are deployed since the war started for Enduring Operation Freedom in Afghanistan (AEOF). The Regiment decided to carry new khukuri/kukri fit to the Afghan environment. Therefore the Afghan Kukri is issued to Gurkhas serving in Afghanistan. So the name of this Khukuri/Kukri is derived after the Aftanistan war. The design and shape of the handle is crafted to give the best possible and fast handling. The full flat tang goes all the way thorugh the handle, glued to the wooden pieces and further riveted with whitemetal to strenghen the whole fixture. This AEOF khukuri/kukri comes two pockets on the back of the scabbard which hold a sharpener called “chakmak” for sharpening the blade and a little utility knife known as “karda” used for skinning, cutting paper and opening later. The notch (kaura or kaudi) in the blade near the hilt of most khukuries/khukuris serves as conduit for the blood on the blade to drip out, this preventing it from soiling the hilt.

This khukuri is made in Ankhola village in eastern Nepal. It is similar to the Bhojpure Khukuri, however unlike the Bhojpuri, it is forged in a different manner and is perhaps one of the most difficult to craft. The handle is made in metallic forms for durability and to give a fancy look The makers also give emphasis on the extra weight to the blade. This khukuri is originated form small village called Chainpur which lies in the eastern part of Nepal. This Khukuri has a beautiful blade and a unique handle beautifully carved Indian rosewood. The blade is made slimmer and lighter than the army types. This khukuri is not used for warfare’s but is used as decorative piece or as a domestic weapon by Gurkhas.
